DEAR Editor;
I wish to draw the public’s attention to the fact that tipping our car guards goes a long way.
I don’t think people are aware that car guards do not actually earn a salary, and so they are solely reliant on the tips that we give to them.
The car guards themselves have to pay what is called ‘ramp fees’, which is usually around R20 to R50 per day and permits them to stand in that area.
While I understand that not all of us carry cash on us, even a R2 makes a difference to their daily earnings.
Fortunately we have some lovely car guards on the coast who provide peace of mind whenever we are out shopping.
While car guards don’t expect a tip, it would help them in the long run.
Consider a car guard who makes about R80 to R100 a day, by the time he deducts taxi fare and ramp fees, he isn’t left with much to take home for that day.
I appeal to fellow South Coasters to consider them next time they are out shopping.
