OPINION: ‘Can I have a severance package, too?

They were evicted for not paying the rent but they moved back to their old building behind licensing.

DEAR Editor;

I went to Tweni post office to see if anyone was still sending me snail mail. The post box hinges protested a lack of oil. Years ago someone told me they oiled them regularly to protect the sanctity of the post.

As I left empty handed my eye fell on a notice. A woman explained they had stopped handling the mail because the powers-that-be in Pretoria had stopped paying their stipend. I don’t blame them.

I thought it would be impolite to mention the annual postbox fee I paid last December, without knowing the stipend was in arrears by eight months at that time.

But no worries, the woman said, I could collect my mail at Port Shepstone post office.

But that’s closed, I pointed out. No it’s not, she said. They were evicted for not paying the rent but they moved back to their old building behind licensing.

I wouldn’t feel safe going there, so I guess my snail mail is dead. I can’t blame any of the managers for the mess. They warned the union during their two-year strike they were putting their jobs on the line by objecting to running the business efficiently.

That old dinosaur is now in its death throes. The workers will get their golden handshake.
