DEAR Editor;
I would like to share my experience at the beach near Shad Lane in Umtentweni this week.
We were totally secluded, on our own, with our 3kg dog Sophie, sitting on a towel with a lead.
What happened next was ridiculous, in my opinion.
A protection services officer told us us to leave the beach, as ‘dogs aren’t allowed on a swimming beach’.
The Shad Lane area is not a swimming beach – and fishermen some 150m from us had various dogs running around.
In addition, the officer telling me to leave was not wearing a mask.
I just left as it’s not worth making a noise, as it could then turn into either a sexist or racial incident, which we don’t want or need.
I’m not sure if they are applying or interpreting the law correctly, but this doesn’t create harmony.
Does this imply no dogs are allowed on any beach from Hibberdene to Port Edward?
Where are the so-called beach demarcation signs then?
To conclude, we always carry a packet, thereby ensuring there are no ‘parcels’ left by our dog.
