OPINION: ‘Sewage issues need to be addressed’

Enquiring from a local I was informed that it had been like this for weeks.

DEAR Editor;

As a local to the area, I can no longer remain quiet with the current total lack of service from the local municipality.

Not only do I strongly feel that their total lack of service is entirely unjustified taking into account the rates and taxes we pay, keeping the simplest of responsibilities executed is surely not too much of an expectation, as I refuse to lower mine and write this letter to you as a sea-loving, beach-going local from Margate.

Overflowing sewage drain at St Mike’s beach.

I had my son and his wife visit us from Limpopo, and was so pleased to have great weather during their stay.

On April 21 (Wednesday) we took a lovely walk from Uvongo to St Michael’s along the coastline.

Reaching the beach at St Michaels, my daughter-in-law needed to use the public toilets.

My son and I walked over to where the lifeguard station is and sat on the wall.

To our horror we found the sewer drain open and overflowing down towards the beach and across the access walkway, on to the beach and into the sea.

Enquiring from a local I was informed that it had been like this for weeks.

I asked one of the lifesavers why the beach was still open as this clearly poses a health risk to those on the beach and swimming in the sea.

The response was that their previous attempts to ban bathing was met with some harsh, borderline disciplinary action being imposed on them for wanting to do so.

The municipalities need to take responsibility and ensure the health, safety, pleasure and enjoyment of locals and holiday visitors alike remains a priority.

I can only pray that you publish this letter in the hope that they read it and that something is done before the next holiday.
