OPINION: ‘Show some courtesy on our roads, please’

I have seen hand waving and other signs shown at times.

DEAR Editor;

I sometimes wonder how some people obtained their driver’s licence.

I’m not talking about those who may have bribed an official, but rather those who don’t seem to care about the rules of the road.

Why nip into traffic when there is no one behind you?

Why race up the left hand side and then cut in on the right, only to wait for a minute or longer at the same red light?

Speaking of traffic lights, I’ve seen a few smashed to pieces in recent times, resulting in the need for a four-way stop.

Boy, is this a nerve-wrecking event in our beloved country.

Some drivers are overly cautious, others too aggressive, and others seemingly oblivious.

It’s the oblivious ones that are a danger – they can race through the intersection without even realising they are supposed to have stopped.

I have seen hand waving and other signs shown at times.

However, having said all that, I have also seen motorists show courtesy and caring, tooting a gentle reminder or encouragement to those too nervous to enter the intersection.

Too often we see accidents taking place that really can be prevented if people drove the speed limit, did not use their phone while driving, and obviously not drive under the influence of any mind-altering substances.
