OPINION: ‘Economy relies on leadership’

We find ourselves in a situation where we have to buy coal that has been mined in our own land, from overseas entities.

DEAR Editor;

Our state owned enterprises are in shambles.

South African Airways (SAA) has outstanding employee payments and on the other hand Eskom released a statement indicating that it would need no less than R1-billion a week from the government to stay operational.

In the same statement Eskom confessed to spending R7.5 billion burning diesel in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid load shedding in the 2019/2020 financial year. This was all stated in their report to parliament.

We find ourselves in a situation where we have to buy coal that has been mined in our own land, from overseas entities.

Sadly, we live in a world where this makes sense.

Another example of unhealthy relationships with first world countries, in 2014 President Jacob Zuma indicated that he had intentions to stop importing chickens from America.

US president at the time, Barrack Obama made it clear that we would carry on importing chickens from them and as you have it, it’s still ongoing to this day.

You get these situations because countries are run like businesses, increasing their annual GDP is always their top interest. This is not wrong, however this is an approach we have to adopt too.

An approach where we are consistently looking for new ways for the country to generate new revenue.

I strongly feel that it’s about time we adopt a political system in which the general public chooses a presidential candidate, and not one picked within a political party as is the case right now.

If the candidate is picked by the public that will increase the chances that the elected candidate will represent the views and interest of the public above those of their political faction.

But if they are chosen by a political party then it means they represent the views and interests of that said political party which are not necessarily those of the general public.
