OPINION: ‘Pauline Duncan assured of a place in our history’

As mayor she was a powerful symbol of unity and hope, working long hours to reach out to and embrace all communities and lay the foundations for social cohesion.

DEAR Editor;

Pauline Duncan was elected as the first mayor of Port Shepstone in democratic South Africa. I was privileged to work with her in that historic period.

Already prior to her election she had embraced the changes symbolised by the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

She was deeply concerned about the violence that subsequently engulfed our region and supported the peace process in every way she could.

As mayor she was a powerful symbol of unity and hope, working long hours to reach out to and embrace all communities and lay the foundations for social cohesion.

Even after leaving office she remained active in civil society organisations dedicated to nation building.

Pauline Duncan is assured of a special place in our history. We are grateful for her contribution and will forever be indebted to her.
