OPINION: ‘Pauline, humble and exemplary who cared only for people’

When we rebuilt more than 100 houses that were razed to the ground, Pauline bravely was at the helm, without fear or favour.

DEAR Editor;

The death of Pauline Duncan leaves behind a deep void and rich legacy no one will be able to fill.

From the late ’80s Pauline endeared herself to us at Practical Ministries, assisting with our bursary programme for children affected by violence and together with the late Reverend Ron Brauteseth and the Harrison family, personally assisted and directed assistance to tens of thousands of children back to school.

In the mid ’90s she bravely aligned herself to our peace and development programme, serving with Dr Khozo Mgojo and the Peace Committee, this meant having a hands on approach even at the risk of her life.

During the tenure of her mayorship, under difficult circumstances, she at times broke protocol and defied rank and file to serve her conscience.

She often related with glee an experience she had with the police when they summoned her for questioning just for visiting our offices at Dolphin Centre, the hub of activities, the next day Pauline was back and got more involved.

She gave of her time, accompanied teams, and served as a humble ambassador for our region at large.

Our town and villages are etched with her footprints, the many graves in the various areas are symbolised by the flowers she would pluck and plant as a mark of respect.

When we rebuilt more than 100 houses that were razed to the ground, Pauline bravely was at the helm, without fear or favour.

A unique humble and exemplary person who cared only for people. A tall giant of a tree has fallen, whose roots dig deep from our veins to our hearts.

She lived her life of service to her very last days. Hamba kahle Ma Pauline Duncan.
