I watched President Cyril Ramaphosa speak on TV on Sunday night. He solemnly informed us that the cabinet had decided to go back to a stage four lockdown.
I still have a list of the inhabitants of the cabinet as well as their photographs. I am well over the threshold of 65 years which applies to those of us who should have retired already; and am no longer the master of repartee. Dementia can start as early as 45 years but it is more likely to manifest in the sixties.
The minister of mines, Gwede (ex Sam) Mantashe with whom I had limited contact in the 1980s is probably at the upper end of those who should have been pensioned off. He has just had his arms twisted by the president, as well as the Department of Forestry and Fisheries.
Angie Motshekga, the Minister of Basic Education, annually provides us with children who neither understand a passage of prose or can put a sentence together.
The Minister of Labour, Thulas Nxesi is in sheltered employment because as the leader of the Communist Party a place had to be found for him in the cabinet.
Aaron Motsoaledi was involved in the Gupta landing and their naturalisation; as well as the Bushiri matter.
The Minister of Transport is perhaps the least competent cabinet minister in the land. The Auditor General has had to have words with him about the state owned entities in the department where his lack of governance is appalling.
With a team like this, the president is hobbled but surely the cabinet needs to be changed with Zweli Mkhize also being shown the door..
