DEAR Editor;
The residents of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality are once again being treated with contempt by the leaders of Ugu District Municipality, and the political leadership that appointed them.
Despite high profile visits from government departments, where promises were made, and interventions by the military after the recent floods, the water situation in the Ugu District has deteriorated and many areas are without water for months on end.
Residents have seen very little improvement in water supply for the funding that was allocated and the actual operations on the ground are not achieving any visible improvement. This affects not only the coastal wards where the infrastructure is being allowed to collapse but also the rural areas where residents are forced to return to collect water from rivers shared with animals.
The situation is made far worse by the inability and lack of will of the Ugu management to communicate honestly with the residents.
The occasional reports published by Ugu give meaningless and inaccurate statements which cannot be believed by anyone with a modicum of common sense. Correspondence with the Ugu leadership in most cases goes unanswered.
Whenever there is a particularly bad water situation Ugu leadership goes into hiding and don’t even answer their phones. This is clear evidence that we are living in a failed municipality when the government cannot even provide the most basic services to its people.
Our citizens deserve better.
It is time for this incompetent leadership to do the honourable thing and resign, and let people who are capable step in to fix the mess they have allowed to develop.
