With Ugu and its water problems, lack of forward planning and creating no Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with incentives to invest via a (Tourism SEZ), past Ugu tourism management has all but killed off the South Coast job creation potential, which could have been created through coastal and maritime tourism with its massive potential for the South Coast ocean economy.
Although the wasted 10 years has passed, it is not too late to fix.
Ugu must implement the Tourism SEZ for the Ugu region, or at least the coastal strip, as soon as possible.
The proposed Port Shepstone harbour will fix this past negligence by Ugu tourism and rebuild investment confidence in the lower South South Coast.
Lastly, there needs to be a new Ugu tourism department created without the past members who have, by not implementing the 2013 Tourism SEZ, held the South Coast growth potential back, inclusive of the hundreds – if not thousands – of new jobs that would had been created if the tourism SEZ was implemented back in 2013.

I agree that there is great potential for job creation on the South Coast through the ocean economy. South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) has been established to actively attract investments in addition to growing tourism in the area.
There is so much untapped potential and, through strategic partnerships, we will be unlocking this and facilitating investments for sustainable job creation.
One sector we will be focusing on is the development of the ocean economy.
This will include catalytic projects, with the creation of the Port Shepstone Harbour being seriously considered to further attract investors to the district.
