OPINION: This man is an unsung hero
He is a happy fellow who sees this rather mundane task as a service to the old folk.
It seems that only in times of crisis does the frailty of human nature makes itself known.
As we are all so acutely aware in this part of KwaZulu-Natal, water, or the lack of supply thereof, is a very sore point.
As has been said, what tourist would deem it a super vacation destination to decide to take a break in an area, regardless of natural beauty and tourist orientated facilities, where one would be wise to bring one’s own water supply along for drinking and ablution purposes?
This water crisis however, has a humanitarian side though, in that besides making one more creative and thrifty in using the water one has, it also brings out the angels among us.
Some, like us, are fortunate to be serviced by water tankers, and they bring their precious cargo of our commodity on a daily basis.
Due to the layout of the dwellings in our community, this tanker crawls the streets, hooter honking like a priest calling the converted to prayer.
Bottles to be filled are clumped along the roadside, and old hands hold them to the gushing faucets on the truck rather like puppies suckling from their mother’s teats.

Normally, on weekdays the driver has a helper who assists with the process of bottle filling.
He is a happy fellow who sees this rather mundane task as a service to the old folk, whom he assists in lugging the heavy and cumbersome plastic barrels to their door. Bless him.
However, when the driver is riding solo without a helper, this chap does not hesitate in the purpose of distributing water to the people.
He gladly springs to the task all while silently hoping that a younger resident will perhaps step forward to lend a hand.
This quite unassuming man is a gem. This man is an unsung hero to us here.
Young man, may bountiful blessings be heaped upon you, sir!
Your selflessness in stepping forward, tired as you may be, in performing this doubly thankless task is more appreciated than you can imagine.
Thank you from all of us here, and may there be other young men like you, willing to assist those of us who are no longer strong enough to do for ourselves.
