OPINION: Land of make believe
Do you remember and do your children believe in his land of seeming make-believe you tell them about?
I wonder if the majority of your readers realise that we older folk lived in a world that the young people of today regard as a self-perpetuating dream of a land of make believe?
Those times were different when it came to individual lifestyles and activities.
Remember climbing the steps in the bus and sitting right at the front.
On warm evenings in summer, us children would congregate on the street and play rowdy cricket or run around madly playing soccer.
Arriving home, be it to a block of flats or your suburban house, did not present itself as entering a razor wire fortress.
Milk, bought with plastic discs from the dairy, and was delivered in glass bottles to your door, and at Christmas the foil tops were printed with holly and red berries.
Cigarettes were so cheap that your offered your cigarettes around to your smoking group – not now! Too costly.
The corner shop which was owned by a Chinese or Greek family and had a smell all of its own.
Lastly, the vegetable/fruit seller who drove around the suburbs pedaling his wares to the housewives who were home, because they did not have to work to help support the family.
