OPINION: DA opposes BBBEE land use policy

In a meeting on Tuesday, September 27, an item relating to the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality land use policy was discussed. This policy incorporates the failed provisions of broad based black economic empowerment. The DA caucus opposed this policy on the grounds that it has not met its objective of broad based empowerment over the past 20 plus years.

It is our contention that if it were to be successful, the unemployment levels of South Africans would not be around the 50% level.

On a local level, we have numerous examples of tender appointments where the successful tenderer does not complete the job or does not pay their subcontractors. This means that money is wasted that could otherwise have been spent on other service delivery issues. We also want to make it clear that we want to see upliftment of all communities and opportunities for all South Africans.

What BBBEE was used for was to enrich the same connected ANC cadres and this never trickled down to the poor and marginalised mainly black South Africans. So, the intention of the original legislation was never met.

The DA’s policy aims to create a society in which all South Africans enjoy both the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, and the opportunities to take advantage of those freedoms.

Two years ago the DA adopted the Economic Justice Policy which clearly states – Redress for the disadvantaged, not for elites. This is a lengthy document that was released by Dr Ivan Meyer – DA Federal Chairperson and I urge everyone to go onto the DA website or to Google this document to understand the DA difference in approach to this issue.

Rest assured that the DA and the DA caucus in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality will continue to fight for economic justice for everyone within our jurisdiction.
