OPINION: Reader shares views on withholding rates

"Rather withhold your rates through a rates diversion organisation."

With regards to an online article, I recently read: “Municipalities on the verge of ‘calamity’: Ratings agency warns of deep trouble for local government — except in the Western Cape”.

Any surprise as to why the Western Cape is an exception? No surprise at all. Why do people keep feeding this failed system by paying their rates and taxes, I don’t know. It just gets stolen. You are actually helping them to steal your hard earned money by paying your rates. Until municipalities are transparent with their procurement procedures, balance sheet and start doing what they are paid to do. Also, not having 19 people on a job with one sort of working at a go slow rate.

This has been a calamity for years, but, people still keep funding it. Rather withhold your rates through a rates diversion organisation. One day when a decent government is running the show and they have shown to perform accordingly, then maybe consider start paying rates. This is my suggestion. I’ve been withholding rates for the last two years. I’ve invested the money and my interest earned is more than the interest they charge for being in arrears. So it’s a no brainer so far as I’m concerned. I have the backing of a organisation who has lodged our grievances on our behalf. So people please consider this. Hit them where it hurts most and that’s in their pockets.

My two cents worth.
