OPINION: Ramaphosa’s jolly trip – but at what cost?

"Our illustrious president, no doubt considered this trip as being vital to regaining some brownie points with the western world’s benefactors."

I applaud our illustrious president, and his entourage of other African leaders, for their collective decision, but obviously instigated by our illustrious president, to travel to the far reaches of our planet to present a peace proposal to Ukrainian and Russian governments. Bravo.
However, the Ukrainian authorities are quite adamant that NO peace dealing will be undertaken, until Russia withdraws unconditionally from Ukrainian soil.

Ramaphosa must have been briefed on this aspect, yet still thought it worth spending R12-million of our taxpayers money in pursuit of this holy grail.
Years back, when I was working in the geological environment, a field trip would sometimes be loosely termed ‘a jolly’ as, although work would be accomplished, entertainment after the day’s trudging over hill and dale was a highlight.

Well, our illustrious president, no doubt considered this trip as being vital to regaining some brownie points with the western world’s benefactors and he is earnestly wanting to ensure grain supplies to Africa are not halted.
Personally, I hope that this excursion was not wasted time and money and Africa as a whole benefits, as Africa is fumbling from domestic crisis to domestic crisis which usually means a civil wars of varying sizes at various times.
Let this jolly then be a supremely productive jolly, and maybe get our illustrious president be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and which will put him on par with the late Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, both recipients of that humanitarian award.
