My wife and I visited the South Coast a few weeks back. Took my father-in-law for a stay at San Lameer for a break as he is a resident at the Margate Retirement Village and has just turned 97.
On our return from San Lameer to Margate we hit some holes in the road in Ramsgate. I was travelling about 55km/h. Burst four tyres and damaged three mag wheels.
We had to get our vehicle taken up to BMW Ballito so they could order new tyres and have the rims straightened.
We were informed that if we were in a smaller vehicle we would have suffered suspension damage and could have been seriously injured.
The cost of repair was R 37 000 excluding an additional two nights in a hotel in Umhlanga.
I cannot believe that, with the South Coast wanting tourists to visit, we have the local municipality that does not seem to understand basic economics or understand that attracting visitors requires basic services to be maintained.
Regretfully, I have informed my friends of the poor condition of the roads and they have now decided to travel to the north coast for holidays.

Editor’s note: We are all eagerly awaiting the start of the promised R580-million upgrade to Marine Drive. Hopefully, once this is done our much-needed tourists will return en masse.
