With the government‘s promise of lifestyle audits in all spheres of government, down to local council level, maybe they should just use this inexpensive system.
The mayor of High Wycombe of Buckinghamshire in England was always weighed upon taking office, as well as during the takeover by the next incumbent.
The custom dates from the 19th century and sees the mayor, his officials and dignitaries seated on a large set of brass weighing scales set up in the middle of the town. If he or she has lost weight they are cheered by the local crowd in the knowledge that they have worked hard during their period of tenure.
If, however, they have gained weight they are subject to some lighthearted booing giving the impression they have done so at the ratepayers’ or taxpayers’ expense. In previous years, they would be pelted with rotten fruit but this is no longer practised…
