BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – Chicken rescued off Umkomaas beach

It was an extremely hot and windy day, and the chicken had been left on the hot sand with her legs tied together.

We received a wonderful story about Rose, the chicken, from Fran Reynolds.

Rose was found on Umkomaas beach by Aine Kloot on January 14. It was an extremely hot and windy day, and the chicken had been left on the hot sand with her legs tied together.

Aine picked her up, rescuing her from a slow death of heat and thirst, and took her home. At first, Rose didn’t know how to use her legs or how to bend her head to drink water. She was a battery layer, which means she had spent her life in a small cage.

At first she was bewildered by grass and reluctant to move. But within two days, she found out how to use her legs, how to drink water, and how to put herself to bed in a box at night. Her comb stood straight up, she walked proudly, and even chased off the cat that went to investigate what she was.

On Friday, Aine and Fran took her up to a special farm animal rescue centre in Ashburton. There she will be kept in a cage for a few days to get used to her surroundings. This beautiful farm has many rescued animals, including lots of different chickens, geese, ducks, goats, sheep, rabbits and a pony. Another chicken went up to Rose’s cage to greet her when she arrived, and then they went off to continue the business of foraging.

However, one brightly coloured bantam was very impressed with Rose and decided to stay by her cage to keep her company. Rose will live out the rest of her life here as a free and happy chicken, foraging for bugs and enjoying the company of lots of other farm birds.

Dylan Davis woke up one morning, took his bakkie and bags and decided to spend the day cleaning up all on his own! It’s so nice to have people like this in our town. This young man did a big beach clean up last weekend and filled his bakkie full of rubbish. He just did it because he loves the beaches and wanted it to be clean at Nkomba beach, at the Umzinto river mouth.
