Preserve our ocean treasures

There will be a beach cleanup at Scottburgh's main beach this Saturday at 09:00.

Conservationist Claire Taylor (along with the rest of the community) celebrated Marine Protected Areas Day (MPA Day) on August 1.

Residents are now invited to discover the vital role these areas play in safeguarding the marine environment by attending a beach cleanup at Scottburgh’s main beach this Saturday at 09:00.

MPAs are underwater parks dedicated to conserving marine life and ensuring the sustainable management of our ocean’s biodiversity.
In South Africa alone, there are 42 MPAs, each serving as a sanctuary for diverse species and habitats.

Take, for instance, Aliwal Shoal MPA, which sits on our very doorstep, stretching 33km along our coastline and extending 7km into the sea.

This area not only shelters an array of marine life, from humpback whales to turtles and reef fish but also preserves historical shipwrecks that add to its unique allure.

MPA Day serves as a reminder to everyone of the shared responsibility they hold in preserving the oceans for future generations.

It’s a day to celebrate marine heritage, learn about conservation efforts and inspire ongoing support for these invaluable marine sanctuaries.

For more information on how you can get involved in MPA Day activities or learn about the local marine ecosystems, visit the KMOS Oceanic Conservation/Guardians of the Blue page on Facebook or WhatsApp 076 5037895.
