OPINION: Bendigo bash a wonderful affair

In addition to the yummy food, a rare treat of musical excellence was served by the incredibly talented Ann-Marie, who took the event to another level and wowed the audience.

Funding is not easily forthcoming from government institutions; however, conservancies certainly take their responsibilities seriously, and thus, Bendigo Conservation Group (BCG) fulfils its mandate.

To protect, preserve and manage in perpetuity the natural environment within the area previously known as Bendigo, in order to sustain the indigenous flora and fauna for the benefit of present and future residents and visitors, we have to get more creative!

Blessedly, Tim and Ann-Marie live in the Bendigo area (Sea Park – Pumula) and are very civic-minded, and volunteered their time, skills and talent to enable us to host our first official fundraiser!

Sunny Sunday was a relief after the grim cold and snow of the previous week, and people were happy to come out and enjoy a glorious afternoon at the friendly and fun Casa Mia restaurant in Sea Park. Owners, Charmaine and Sharon collaborated with BCG to add extra value to our efforts by serving some specials on the day.

In addition to the yummy food, a rare treat of musical excellence was served by the incredibly talented Ann-Marie, who took the event to another level and wowed the audience. Lots of fun and laughter filled the air, and the generosity of our sponsors brought extra value to the event.

Some of the committee ladies of the BCG took care of the registration desk, encouraging people to join us for a low membership of R50 per person for this half year!

Please contact Davina (secretary) if you’d like more info or to sign up.

We focus on the Bendigo Nature Reserve on the corner of Hazel Road and R102, entrance through Leka’s at B Cubed, which is free to walk during any reasonable business hours; donations welcome.

The main purpose of this fundraiser was to raise money for an Eco Education Centre in the reserve, which would enhance our visitor experience.

BCG hosts interesting monthly meetings, occasional trips and beach walks.

Our WorkParty Wednesdays (09:00 to 15:00) are an opportunity for local folk to upskill their garden staff by sending them to learn from our lovely Mbeke, who is trained in Alien Invasive Plant removal (as well as permaculture and other exciting things).

Work starts at 09:00, and anyone who arrives can get free training in exchange for a few hours of labour.

Garden service companies, municipalities and many other groups and organisations can benefit from this service – and the more knowledge that is shared will benefit everyone.

With grateful thanks to all who attended the Bendigo bash, and to all the sponsors.
