With more than 22 000 indigenous seed plants from almost 230 different families, our rainbow nation hosts 10% of the world’s flowering species, which means South Africa is a major contributor to global ecology.
Of course, our slice of paradise supports an extremely rich collection of these, with around 40% of larger woody species considered endemic to the region. The Green Net encourages everyone to celebrate our indigenous gems by showcasing them in our gorgeous Biodiversity calendars, the third edition of which will be available in November for Christmas or year-end gifts.
While we love all plants, Alien Invasive Plants (AIPs) outcompete our indigenous varieties, often use more precious water, and do not host the variety of pollinators that native plants do.
Some tangible benefits of using indigenous plants for landscaping include a reduced need for watering and artificial fertiliser, which can lower water bills and cut costs for garden maintenance because they are adapted to the timing of the seasons, the harshness of the weather and water availability of the particular area they evolved within. They are also typically adapted to surviving local pests and, therefore, do not need chemical pesticides.
Variety (biodiversity) is a key component to fostering a healthy ecosystem, as different plants offer different deterrents and barriers. Monoculture – only growing one type of plant – can make a garden susceptible to diseases and pests. Nature restoration is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but a critical element of delivering action on climate change, health and wellbeing, including sustainable food production.
We can all make a positive impact! Simply by planting a variety of indigenous plants and restoring our natural environment, we can all be activists for change. Visit your local nurseries, swap seeds and cuttings with friends and families, and learn all you can about the magnificent natural environment which we are blessed to call home.
