BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – Sailors gather in Pennington

Community news and events for the mid-South Coast area.

Is there sailing in Pennington? Well, Thomas Wrobel had the following to say: So, Pennington can boast having the ocean, plenty of wind, an active ski boat club, and spotting the occasional yacht passing on the horizon, but is there sailing in Pennington? Yes! Unbeknown to many, there is an active and enthusiastic Umdoni Model Boat Club in Pennington.

These folks sail mainly 36-inch radio-controlled yachts on the private dam at the Doghouse Craft Cafe, off the R102.

They get together on Wednesday and Saturday mornings when up to a dozen colourful yachts may be seen navigating the course set out on the water and challenging each other in races.

The club conducts a series of four competitive sailing regattas every year, the last of which was sailed in November.

There is also a small but growing contingent of beautifully built powered scale models in the club.

Spectators are always welcome, and visiting youngsters are often given a spell at the controls as a treat after a short skipper’s briefing.

Anyone interested in viewing or perhaps joining this entertaining and relaxing pastime may pop in at the Doghouse Craft Cafe dam for a chat with the sailors. For further information, contact Thomas on 083 6437044.

In other news, Viv Sandwith from Tidy Towns Pennington put out an appeal for an old surfboard a while ago, not really having a plan for it at the time. Dave Tredway of Davmor Construction immediately donated one. When Selborne Beach Club offered to revamp the lifeguard tower, Viv knew exactly what they could use it for. They gave the brief to Brad Keet (the faithful printing expert), and he did an awesome job. Selborne kindly put it up with sturdy brackets and put up the sign.
