OPINION: Where are you Madam Mayor?

The residents urge the mayor to prioritise service delivery above all else, even amidst ongoing wage disputes.

We, the residents of the North Cluster, are writing to express our deep concerns regarding your (mayor Zodwa Mzindle) response to the recent visit from the KZN Cogta MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi and the ongoing issues affecting our community.

It is evident from Buthelezi’s statements that the current situation is a labour issue stemming from delayed actions by management. We appreciate his efforts to give your administration the opportunity to address these concerns, but it appears that these opportunities have not been taken seriously.

We are particularly disheartened by your decision to prioritise attendance at the ANC annual conference over engaging with your constituents and the MEC during this critical time. The silence from your office during the strike has been troubling, and the ramifications of this issue on our community have been significant. Many businesses and residents have suffered substantial losses, yet we have yet to receive any acknowledgement or apology regarding this mismanagement.

Instead of addressing the pressing need for rebates for services not rendered, we were met with a rate increase. This lack of accountability is unacceptable. Furthermore, the absence of a transparent and factual statement regarding the strike only adds to our frustration and distrust.

As leaders, you are mandated to ensure sustainable services, maintain a healthy and safe environment, and engage with the community in local governance. Unfortunately, your actions so far have not reflected this responsibility. Many residents are willing to support and collaborate on finding solutions to these pressing service delivery issues, yet we have largely been ignored throughout this process.

The management of RNM has not only failed in its role as an employer but has also fallen short in delivering essential services to the community. We urge you to prioritise service delivery above all else, even amidst ongoing wage disputes.

If you and your leadership team are unable to restore these vital services, we believe it would be appropriate for you to consider resigning from your position along with the municipal manager and the speaker.

We hope to see immediate action and communication from your office regarding these critical issues.
