As we settle down into the first weeks of 2025, the new year feels full of promise. We’re not going to talk rubbish this week, but we will focus on fresh starts in the garden because nature nurtures us, and that is very important right now.
Planting indigenous plants is beneficial to the environment and local biodiversity as they are well suited to the local climate, soil and water conditions, having evolved to survive in their region. They generally use less water than exotic and invasive varieties and attract pollinators that are harmonious with local conditions to support a unique ecosystem – in other words, they belong here.
In the three years of producing the KZN Biodiversity Calendar, The Green Net has highlighted many remarkable – and often less well-known but exquisitely beautiful – indigenous species, raising interest and awareness among experienced growers as well as those who are just getting started.
We are extremely grateful to the advertisers who came on board to assist with the calendar printing costs, and we encourage everyone to support these sponsors who have demonstrated their support for a healthy and vibrant environment, as well as everyone who contributed in any way to make this our ‘best’ calendar to date.
The Green Net’s 2025 Biodiversity Calendar is available from Pennington to Port Edward for only R150. If you haven’t got one yet, please go to one of the distributors listed below or contact us directly.
Pennington Conservancy; Pumula Superette; Folly Fields Nursery (Umzumbe); Bendigo Conservation Group (through Leka’s at BCubed) and Locals in Southport; The Pickled Chick (Tweni); The Good Health shop (St Mike’s), Froggy Pond Nursery (Uvongo); The Bloom Pot Nursery (Sebenza Village, Margate); Southbroom Conservancy; Secret Sithela & Munster Motor Museum (Munster); The Farm Stall, Port Edward; and Leopard Rock in Oribi Gorge.
We encourage estate agents, garden services, schools and other organisations to support this initiative to learn more about what makes our South Coast environment so special.
Biodiversity Blessings for 2025
