OPINION: Building rubble not the solution

There is also potentially hazardous material that has been dumped along the banks of the Mpenjati River.

As a long-time South Coast resident and nature lover, I was shocked recently to view a video of the Mpenjati Nature Reserve, which shows the southern bank of the Mpenjati River (alongside the picnic spots and beyond the bird hide), where building rubble has been placed, seemingly in an attempt protect the grassy verge.

The concerning thing is that apart from bricks and concrete, there are also potentially hazardous materials: wire, re-bar, aluminium strips and broken ceramic tiles.

A different solution complying with environmental legislation needs to be sought, and it’s imperative for the rubble to be removed without delay.
