OPINION: Thank you for your dedication to protecting our marine environment

I applaud the Stop the Strangle initiative and its focus on ghost fishing gear, I just believe it is equally important to address the systemic issues that contribute to this problem.

Abandoned fishing nets are a significant source of plastic pollution in our oceans, so to truly get to the root of all this issue we need to address why all this gear is going in the water in the first place – our eating of sea life.

And when you consider fish isn’t even good for our health anymore as the animals are so full of lead, mercury, thallium, cadmium, PCBs, PCDDs… and high levels of omega-3 fatty acids increase men’s risk of developing prostate cancer, a shift to plants would be better for our health in so many ways.

Thank you, again, for your dedication to protecting our marine environment. It would be wonderful if this year’s Stop the Strangle could be one of the last as we work to keep our oceans free of ghost gear for good.
