Jay Pillay: The August 2026 Himalayan Tsunami Accord

Do the borders we draw on maps mean anything when nature is in a rage?

A huge chunk of a Himalayan glacier broke off, travelled a considerable distance, and dammed a river. When the dam couldn’t hold, it burst.

Perhaps you recall seeing the devastation as the river tsunami tore down the valley.

The death and destruction wrought by nature near a disputed border is unimaginable.

A disputed border? Really? Do the borders we draw on maps mean anything when nature is in a rage?

I have a dream that we will see the statement below emerge soon.

STATEMENT

Following the events of August 2026, all parties involved in the China-Tibet question hereby pledge never, under any circumstances, to use military force to resolve territorial or border disputes. The destruction that nature can wreak is quite enough.

This agreement, to be known as the August 2026 Himalayan Tsunami Accord, shall remain in force in perpetuity.

Duly signed by China and Tibet

Surely I can dream.
