OPINION: Action needed to address rat problem at Rocky Bay pier
Fishermen not cleaning up after themselves has worsened the situation.
I have been a fisherman on the South Coast for over 20 years and Rocky Bay is one of my favourite beaches to fish at.
The Rocky Bay pier is frequently used by fishermen who like myself try to keep it neat and tidy, but we have noticed not everyone does this, and this has contributed to a rat infestation on the pier.
The rat problem has been ongoing for many years.
Many people know about this ongoing rat problem, but no one seems to be taking any action to improve the situation.
This is making the pier lose its value as there is often an unpleasant smell, and people are avoiding the spot.
I am hoping that publishing this letter gives fishermen a wake up call to start taking care of their beaches, and I hope the right people see this to try and help us make a difference.
It would also be appreciated if a tap could be installed on the pier for fishermen to wash up after themselves, and extra bins for rubbish.
