Duma replaces Zikalala as provincial chair

Duma said that he is hoping that the current leadership will begin to interact with the people on the ground and make sure that things happen.

The branch which nominated South Coaster Siboniso Duma for the position of KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress (ANC) chairperson said it will not stand by and keep quiet should Duma make any errors or get out of hand.

The chairman of the John Mchunu branch, Malusi Mchunu, was speaking after Duma was named the ANC provincial chairperson following the party’s provincial elective conference held in Durban over the weekend.

Duma snatched the position of chair from KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala.

Duma bagged 930 votes while Zikalala had 665 votes.

Zikalala was left in the cold as he did not make it back to the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC).

Speaking to Fever, Mchunu said just because they voted for the current leadership doesn’t mean they will become the leadership’s ‘goblins’.

“We will not constantly agree with the new leadership. If there are errors and we feel like they are out of hand, we have given ourselves the responsibility to stand up and say we are against that certain action or the way they are doing things because that’s our responsibility,” said Mchunu.

He added that as a branch they can longer claim Duma’s victory as their own because it was delegates and the people who elected the leadership as a whole that made it happen.”

“On behalf of the John Mchunu branch, the important thing was to see the outcome that would have brought about the change we are seeing. At this time, Duma’s victory is no longer something we can claim as being our thing. All we were saying from the beginning is that we see a leader here and we feel that he will he is the one who will fulfill the mandate and the programmes of the ANC. So, we are just hoping that he will unify the party and make sure that everything functions like it’s supposed to,” said Mchunu.

He added that they are hoping that the current leadership will begin to interact with the people on the ground and make sure that things happen.

South Coasters such as Peggy Nkonyeni, Nontembeko Boyce, Londolo Zungu, and Sibongile Khathi were elected as members of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).

Meanwhile, the newly elected chairperson Siboniso Duma, said as the new leadership they will work with the private sector to help boost the local economy.

Duma, who was the ANC deputy chairperson of the George Mbhele branch in Umzumbe from 2004 to 2006, said: “I think the major focus area is to take the ANC back to where it belongs. We are the leaders in society so we must make sure we get done all that needs to be done in order to embrace what is required in terms of traditional leadership, the private sector, and the economy so that we can develop the communities that are currently poor.”
