Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) will be celebrated across the globe on MPA Day on August 1.

Discover the incredible marine life on your doorstep by getting involved in the activities in your area.

Annually, celebrations include programmes with guided hikes, snorkelling excursions, beach clean-ups, fun runs, educational talks, citizen science projects, online events and more.

MPA Day founder Dr Judy Mann-Lang said the aim is to include everyone, from every walk of life, no matter where they live because the health of the ocean affects everyone.

The day’s activities are designed to inspire all ages and interests, with online activities connecting those who live far from the ocean as well.

If you aren’t able to participate, organisers encourage you to do whatever you can to create awareness, reduce plastic usage, or pick up litter – as every small act works toward the greater goal – protecting the ocean.

For KZN locals celebrating near the Aliwal Shoal MPA, this year’s organiser is Wild Alliance Africa/Aliwal Shoal Hope Spot.

Activities include a 33km beach walk along the length of the MPA, guided scuba diving and snorkelling excursions on Aliwal Shoal, screening of the Mission Blue documentary featuring a special message from Dr Sylvia Earle, and citizen science rocky shore exploration with Wild Alliance Africa Ocean Leadership interns.
