Gamalakhe netball team receives donation
The team received two netball kits, two sets of bibs, four balls, cones, and a timer.
There is a need for sports facilities for different sports codes in each ward within municipalities.
These were the words of the KwaZulu-Natal chairperson of the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA), Zama Zindela, after she handed over two netball kits, two sets of bibs, four balls, cones, and a timer to the Zipho netball team in Gamalakhe at the TB Molefe Stadium on Saturday.
The provincial chairperson of the YCLSA said it is their duty as young people to give back to other young people when they start a certain initiative.
She said as the Young Communist League, they believe that young people should be supported in every possible way because they can see that the children of the working class are under attack.
“We have been taught that a healthy body equals a healthy mind, keeping fit is key. We support such initiatives and we will be asking the government to also assist in such initiatives,” said Zindela. She added that the Zipho netball team trains at the TB Molefe Stadium, yet there is no netball court in the stadium.
“Each ward must have facilities for different sports codes. What is happening is that sports grounds are being built but they are not well-maintained. We want these facilities to be taken care of for the sake of young people. We don’t want to only see certain sports being available in certain schools and areas. Our communities need these facilities more than anything because people who come from struggling backgrounds do not have much to do, that’s why you find young people in taverns,” said Zindela.
Meanwhile, the founder of the netball team, Thembeka Mkhungo said the donation was much-needed and welcomed.
She said the Zipho team is under the Zigqaje Development Project.
“This organisation is in desperate need of donations since it only started operating in May. We did not have a kit so the team played matches wearing their casual clothes. We still need more donations and help. Transport is also a problem, especially when we have to play league at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre,” she said.
