Sporting equipment for people with special needs
Everyone is encouraged to do some sort of sport whether they are able or disable.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation handed over sporting equipment to people with special needs in the Ugu District on Tuesday.
Items handed over included basketball wheelchairs, netball balls, soccer balls, chess games, relay sticks, kits and more.
The department’s Ugu District head, Thembanini Yengwa said they are encouraging everyone to do some sort of sport whether they are able-bodied or disabled, adding that is it every human being’s right to participate in sports.

“But in order for you to participate in sports, you need the necessary equipment. The department has bought wheelchairs so that the beneficiaries can participate in sports such as basketball, tennis, netball, football and more. The donation is to ensure that when beneficiaries have to play at provincial level they have the necessary kits and equipment,” said Yengwa, adding that they urge all beneficiaries to continue training and playing within their local municipalities and not only when it is time for provincial tournaments.
She said when beneficiaries only play at provincial level, it makes the district look weak in terms of performance because people do not train.
“These games are very important, within the district we have basketball players who are competing at national level and that is very inspiring,” said Yengwa.
Meanwhile, the handover was also attended by two councillors from Ugu District Municipality.
Ugu District Disability Forum’s, Bongumusa Mzobe said they are grateful for the opportunity given to them by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
“The department and Ugu always come to our rescue when we have requests and needs as people living with disabilities. This shows that they do not only care about people who are able and their sports but they also keep us in mind. We thank the Ugu head of department who encourages and challenges us to be better,” he said.
