Former parliament’s head of intelligence buried

According to the Mabhinki Branch in Ward 27 where Xolo began his political career, Xolo was part of a generation of 'young lions' who were instrumental in building structures of not only the ANCYL, but also the ANC in the region.

High profile politicians such as Mxolisi Kaunda, Ravi Pillay, Nhlakanipho Ntombela, and more were seen at the Esayidi TVET College, Gamalakhe Campus on Saturday attending the funeral of Bheki Xolo.

Xolo was the regional secretary of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Tolomane Mnyayiza region (former Lower South Coast region).

Xolo was a the regional secretary at the time Sikhumbuzo Zero Mqadi was the ANCYL regional chairperson on the South Coast.

According to the Mabhinki Branch in Ward 27 where Xolo began his political career, he was part of a generation of ‘young lions’ who were instrumental in building structures of not only the ANCYL, but also the ANC in the region. It added that Xolo’s generation, gave this generation a solid organisation and foundation to further consolidate the interest of young people.

Xolo’s family described him as an intellectual who was big on getting an education.

His family said that he previously worked as the head of intelligence in Parliament in Pretoria, before working for Ravi Pillay’s office and before joining Ugu District Municipality.

Xolo is survived by two daughters and a son.

Meanwhile, Thami Msomi who had worked closely with Xolo said: “We met many years ago as young people serving in the ANCYL. During those days we were serving without an expectation of any rewards. What satisfied and made us happy was to see the ANCYL growing from strength to strength and effectively playing its role of mobilising young people behind the vision of the ANC, and reinforcing it. You were one of the ANCYL activists and leaders, who served and led the organisation when it was not fashionable. It was under extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances when the possibility of losing one’s life was hovering around. You operated in the midst of ward lords and sacrificed your youth. Notwithstanding all the challenges of the time you served your movement and people with dedication and commitment. You will be dearly missed by your movement, people and comrades. May your revolutionary soul rest in eternal power and peace, my dear comrade and friend.”

Also, Ward 5 councillor Phumlani Gumbi said the idea to start issuing letters for community meetings in his ward was inspired by Xolo.

Former ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Nhlakanipho Ntombela said members of the ANC need to learn from the type of work Xolo did and they type of person he was.
