In my opinion: Fear of applauding Ugu for water supply
It is disturbing that we sometimes have to acknowledge or applaud a municipality for doing a job it is mandated to do.
Never applaud a fish for swimming.
These are the words that come to mind whenever I feel like praising Ugu District Municipality for not cutting our water supply in Ward 28 in Gamalakhe for over a month. I don’t know how many times I contemplated writing this in fear of waking up to dry taps, again, after this piece has been published.
It has been quite shocking that every day for the past month, we wake up to water in our showers and kitchen taps. Although we have had consistent water supply for almost a month, we are patiently waiting for the day we open the tap and nothing comes out.
And this is not right. It is disturbing that we sometimes have to acknowledge or applaud a municipality for doing a job it is mandated to do. It is even more concerning that while we have water, we can’t really enjoy it because we are worried about not having any the next day.
It is even a challenge writing about consistent water supply in our areas when there are areas in the district that have been without water for months. Ugu District Municipality’s ability to provide uninterrupted water supply in Ward 28 has made me realise that the district municipality can give its residents the water they need.
The municipality’s ability to provide water to us for over a month has also made me sceptical to some of the reasons it generally gives on water outages. Even with the recent stages of loadshedding, we have had water coming out of our taps at just the right pressure.
Hopefully, this opinion piece will not inspire water interruptions in my ward, but motivate the municipality to restore and maintain consistent water supply in every corner of the district.
