Vetaran radio journalist dies
He further described Mavuso as a person who was always firm and professional.
The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has received the sad news of the untimely death of a renowned radio current affairs newscaster and a creative talent Bongani Mavuso.
ANC Provincial Secretary, Bheki Mtolo said we can only imagine the pain that the entire family is experiencing at a loss so great that no man can heal.
He added that what saddens them most is that Mavuso’s departure is a depletion of a solid and clear pool of journalists available to the nation.
“This is a man who has been an invaluable asset not only to the people of KwaZulu-Natal but to the country and Africans in the diaspora. uDonga LwaMavuso, as he was affectionately known, was a remarkable person who throughout his professional life excelled in a variety of careers in broadcasting – as a presenter, producer, an MC, a writer and an award-winning poet. He carved for himself a niche in the hearts and minds of millions of people throughout the country for his presenting skills in the most current affairs programme on UKhozi FM. He was admired by his fellow colleagues and fans for his humility,” said Mtolo, adding that over the years, as a seasoned newscaster he interviewed ANC presidents and provincial leaders deployed in various spheres of government.
He further described Mavuso as a person who was always firm and professional.
Mtolo said while they understand the sentiment that the primary role of the media is not to provide public relations services for the ANC and ANC-government, they also view the media as an essential partner in publicising the steps taken by the ANC government to change the lives of the people.
“Holding ANC leaders accountable is what uDonga lwaMavuso did at any given moment. He understood that the relationship between media and government should not necessarily be adversarial. At all times – his main focus was the consumers of government services, the ordinary members of society, his listeners whom he served with distinction. As we pay our last respects to this dedicated newscaster, a lesson that we must draw is that the media can contribute greatly in the socio-economic growth of our province through canvassing inputs and intellectual exchange of opinion where policies focusing on socio-economic growth are openly discussed and debated,” said Mtolo.
He added: “As we mourn with a deep sense of sadness the passing of this son of the soil, we say his untimely death is not in vain. Many aspiring broadcasters have been inspired by his dedication and his professionalism throughout his career. We call upon the people of KwaZulu-Natal, leaders of faith – neighbours and friends to pray and support the family during this period. Niduduzeke nonke mndeni kanye nomphakathi wonke wase Dumbe.”
