R8 million facelift for Umdoni sports field
The municipality said the project is marked to be completed by June 15.
The Umzinto sports field under Umdoni Municipality is getting a facelift of over R8 million.
Umdoni Municipality mayor, Sibongile Khathi revealed this during a sod turning ceremony to officially mark the commencement of the refurbishment project.
Khathi said the scope of work includes an upgrade of the main football field, renovations of the building which consists of offices, changerooms, ablution facilities, and a security gate house.
She added that there will also be an installation of vehicle and pedestrian access gates, renovation of the combi-court surface and installation of its equipment and wire fencing.
The mayor said the scope also includes the installation of stormwater drainage system, upgrade of existing floodlight sand installation of new ones on the combi-court, reinstatement of electricity and water connections, repair of the concrete palisade fencing and the spectator grandstand and also the installation of a turf irrigation system.
Khathi said the project is marked to be completed by June 15.
“The Umzinto sports field will be more than just a sports field. Over and above this sports facility being a central home ground for the Umdoni community, its full operation will ensure the dilapidated structures are no longer used as harbours of social ills. A colossal amount of work is to be undertaken in this project which promises a transformation to a state-of-the-art facility. Another end goal in the refurbishment of this facility is to make it an all-inclusive community facility which caters for both young and elderly people. There will therefore be an addition to the facility of an outdoor gym,” said Khathi, adding that a 24-hour security service will be on site to avoid possible repetition of acts of vandalism and its usage in the advancement of social ills..
She added that a lot of resources have previously gone to waste as a result of theft and vandalism amongst others.
She said they condemn such acts that seek to derail the municipality’s community development plan.
“I plead with the community to ensure this facility is well looked after. It would be a shame and slap on the government’s face if this facility was to be vandalised again,” added Mayor Khathi, adding that the employment of local people is crucial as this ensures the unemployed receive opportunities to provide for their families.
