“No mercy for police accused of killing women”

We remain firm and unshaken to fight against the abuse and murder of women and children.

KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza has called on the justice system to grind harder on the police officer accused of killing two young women in KwaNyuswa area.

MEC Khoza was reacting to the brutal murder of two women in a backhouse of a 23-year-old police officer.
She said although the information remains sketchy, it is alleged that both young women were shot multiple times and 11 spent cartridges were found on the scene. It is believed that the firearm used could be a service pistol.

She added that it is also alleged that the police officer was in a romantic relationship with both deceased.
The MEC said it was disturbing to learn about the brutal murder of innocent women.
She sent her heartfelt condolences to both families who lost their daughters in such a horrific incident.
She added that anyone who commits atrocities against women deserved no mercy from the criminal justice system.

“We find solace in the fact that the police officer is in custody. No one should be above the law. Because this police officer was arrested, we believe he will be able to shed light with law enforcement on what exactly happened. By giving women killers harsher sentences, our courts will send a message to these abusers that their actions will not be tolerated,” said Khoza, adding that people who killed women must never be allowed to share the same spaces with society, nor be allowed to roam the streets.

“We are very disturbed that a police officer, someone who is expected to be in the forefront in providing safety of citizens, became the one facing such an accusation. Indeed, he must provide answers,” she said.
She added that she has dispatched a team of social workers to families of the both deceased to provide psycho-social support.

The police officer appeared before Pinetown Magistrate’s Court recently.
A team of social workers picketed outside court to call for the magistrate not to grant bail to the officer.
MEC Khoza called on peace-loving citizens to give support to the families of the deceased.

“We must all unite and call for justice for both deceased and we need to support families after losing their loved ones. We want our courts to show no mercy to people who continue to kill women. In memory of these women who perished at the hands of a criminal, we must move with speed to put these murderers behind bars,” she said.
Khoza also commended law enforcement agencies for responding swiftly by ensuring that the police officer spent the weekend in custody.

“The law must be equally harsh to all officers who believe they are above the law. As a collective in society, we need to resolve to fight the scourge of gender-based violence. We remain firm and unshaken to fight against the abuse and murder of women and children,” said Khoza
