‘Prevent stock theft’

Regularly check your stock, the paddocks and fences where the stock are grazing.

Port Shepstone police say there are a number of ways the public can prevent stock theft.

Captain Petros Mpinge, Port Shepstone police spokesperson, said there are some things one can do to deter thieves.

He said you must regularly check your stock, the paddocks and fences where the stock are grazing.
Mpinge added that keep a large dog near your pens to deter thieves and warn you of intruders.

“Keep all paddocks, sheds and gates closed and locked. Keep your fences and gates in good condition. Be aware of strangers or unfamiliar vehicles in your area. Write down their registration number and all other relevant information and pass it onto your local police. Also alert your neighbours. Tattooing is often the cheapest form of permanent identification and is suitable for all breeds of livestock. One suggestion is to tattoo the inside of the ear and also in some other unsuspecting area, such as the inside of the beast’s toes. Hot iron branding or electrical branding is the most visible marking system,” said Mpinge.

He added that a good idea is to also take photographs or videos of valuable animals with the brand or ear tags clearly visible which will also help police in an investigation.
