“Splash Rock Shellhole will have a memorial service in Newport Road, Port Edward on Sunday, November 13 at the Methodist Church. Pastor John Pretorius, a Moth from Splash Rock Shellhole will conduct the service at 8.30am. All denominations are most welcome. We are looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces that supported us and joined in our Remembrance Day Parades over the years,” they said, adding that for more information, contact Old Bill Jaap on 082 882 3758.
“This was first started on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. A Lady called Moina Belle Michael, who was so taken by a poem called In Flanders Fields, dedicated her life to remembering those who fought in World War 1 (WW1). Today, we remember all those who fought and are fighting in all conflicts. We, in South Africa remember all who have fought for the South African Armed Forces. The red poppy has become the symbol by which this event is commemorated each year,” said the organisers.
