Pianist wants to teach music
Zulu said his love for music began while he was still doing drama in a group called Emuhle All Artists which is based in Gamalakhe.
Pianist Nhlakanipho Zulu was recently nominated in the Mzansi Musical Instrumentalist Awards in the category of Best Cover instrumentalist.
The awards ceremony was held in Durban on Sunday last week.
Zulu said although he did not bag the award, he is still hopeful that he will one day bring the award home.
Originally from Gamalakhe, Zulu said he does different music genres. He said he studied Jazz but he currently plays Gospel music.
He said he currently goes to the Christ Centred Missions Church (CCMC) in Queensburgh under the leadership of Dr Siboniso Dlamini.
“Also, I play popular music and the piano. The organisers of the Mzansi Musical Instrumentalist Awards found that the guys in the background who play huge roles for singers are not recognised, so they decided to do the event to appreciate musicians behind the scenes. One morning I got a text message saying that I was nominated, I was so excited and grateful because to me that said, ‘that my hard work is now being recognised’,” he said.

Zulu said his love for music started while he was still doing drama in a group called Emuhle All Artists which is based in Gamalakhe and is directed by Bongani Baai.
He added: “Baai connected me with Norma Spiller who taught me to play the piano in 2013 and 2014. Spiller had to move from Port Shepstone so she gave me her piano since I did not have one. Then, I went to do piano lessons for a year with Davin Guest who is based in Margate. Then I met Andile Yenana who teaches at the Esayidi TVET College, Gamalakhe Campus who played a huge role in the type of pianist I am today.”
Zulu said his goal in his career is to further his studies, adding that this is because he is currently giving private music lessons to pupils at Durban Girls’ High School under Gertrude’s Kitchen Music.
