Presentation on symbiotic relationship between fig tree and fig wasp

Bendigo Conservation Group will host an informative presentation on the fascinating 80 million year relationship between the fig tree and the fig wasp on Sunday, November 20.
The presentation will be done by Graeame Mcgill.
According to the group’s Elise Airey, the fig tree and the fig wasp share a mutual relationship, with the wasps pollinating fig trees’ flowers and the trees in return providing wasps with mating and hatching grounds.
Airey added that the fig tree is a keystone species, saying that it plays a unique and crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and population density.
“At any given time, fig trees are always producing fruit, and sometimes are the only fruit available to animals and birds. The fig fruit is eaten by monkeys, squirrels, bats, more than 100 varieties of birds and even elephants,” said Airey.
The informative session will be held at Leka’s (corner of Hazel and old South Coast road, in Southport).
Airey said there will also be a lucky draw where a luxury food hamper worth R1 000 could be yours if you attend.
“No fee but donations are welcome,” she said. For more information, email elise@pixie.co.za
