Scam targets aspiring police trainee applicants

Those who receive these text messages are urged to contact their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop Hotline number on 08600101111.

The South African Police Service(SAPS) is cautioning all applicants who participated in the recruitment and selection process for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP) about a hoax message that is circulating demanding applicants to pay for ‘college accessories’.

SAPS national spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said the hoax message that has been circulating and has been received by several applicants demanding that each applicant pays R200 towards college accessories.
Mathe said the SAPS is urging and advising applicants not to be misled by the fake message which intends to rob them off their monies.

She added that successful candidates will not be required to pay any amount of money towards the entry level police training.

“The SAPS covers all training costs inclusive of transportation to the training academies and also makes provision for all equipment and uniform that is required during training. The recruitment and selection programme has reached an advanced stage and all successful applicants will be notified when to report at the various training academies. Those who receive these text messages are urged to contact their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop Hotline number on 08600101111,” said Mathe.
