Karateka, Ilhaam Amod, needs your help to participate in more World Karate Federation (WKF) tournaments this year, to achieve her goals.

The 15-year-old needs to attend upcoming tournaments in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, and is asking companies and individuals to sponsor her accommodation, transport, safety equipment, and so forth.
The athlete’s mother, Fuzlin Hamid, said if a company does sponsor Ilhaam in any way, she could advertise for them in the newspaper.

“I would expose their companies to say that they are helping with developing girls’ in sports. Ilhaam is the only female in the Ugu elite team out of 15 members. She has come so far, she has received her Ugu colours, she just qualified for her provincial colours for 2023, so now she is trying to achieve her national and Protea colours. But in order for her to get there, she needs to attend all these tournaments, they help in improving her ranking. And from there she would be able to qualify for those international tournaments,” said Hamid.
Ilhaam said she started karate seven years ago after realising the need for self-defence and to boost her self-confidence.

She added that karate is her passion, saying that a career in sports science is her long-term goal.
She will be grading for red belt in June and brown belt in December this year.
Fuzlin said she has been sending out requests for donations on social media, adding that they have had people who assisted with Ilhaam’s provincial tournaments.
She added that it would be difficult to estimate the exact amount needed for a tournament.

“Tournament entry fees come to us at the 11th hour so if sponsors are willing to pledge, it would be easier for us to give them the cost details and the official documents once they have been given to us. But generally, these tournaments for the whole year can cost about R50 000. There are many karateka in the Ugu District who are also looking for sponsorships and if the community and businesses can come together to also assist them, that would be great,” she said.
