Spelling bee boosts kids confidence
Bagging first position was Mikuyo Zulu who is in Grade 5 at Durban Primary. He won R1000, a certificate and a medal.
A spelling bee competition organised by Homework Club with Aunt Zimmy has boosted the confidence of the children who entered, and has also made them aspire towards improving their vocabulary.
This was the sentiment shared by parents whose children entered the competition hosted by Zimkhitha Tshobonga (Aunt Zimmy) in Gamalakhe on August 5.
Bagging first position was Mikuyo Zulu who is in Grade 5 at Durban Primary. He won R1000, a certificate and a medal.
Margate Primary’s Grade 5 learner Sivuyisiwe Jonas came in second, winning herself R500, a certificate and a trophy.
Siphosethu Mvundla of Sithembinkosi Primary School (Grade 5) bagged third place and won R200, a certificate and a trophy.
Sivuyisiwe’s mom, Aphiwe Jonas told Fever that she encouraged her 10-year-old to enter because she has seen her love for academics.
“She always wants to watch educational kids’ shows, we play spelling competitions at home and she has always been interested in such things. So when the opportunity came, she took it with both hands and entered the competition. After placing second, she had mixed emotions. She was shocked and excited at the same time, more so because she bagged second place. She initially thought that it was just some random competition with nothing to win. We were also not expecting her to take second position, so we are very proud of her,” she said, adding that Sivuyisiwe has insisted on saving the R500 she won.
Meanwhile, Sonto Mavundla, Siphosethu’s mother said she has noticed that the competition has boosted her daughter’s confidence, as she happens to be shy.
“Seeing her school work and her results after every term made me realise she has a lot of potential. It motivated me to sign her up for the competition. She was very excited to make it to the top three out of the 29 entrants. She is no longer shy, I noticed that in the first round, she was very shy but after that she was comfortable,” she said, adding that Siphosethu decided to put a portion of her winnings in her piggy bank.
Tshobonga thanks the children’s parents for their support and all contestants for entering.
She can confirm that she will host another spelling bee soon.
