New album for hip-hop star

Originally from Gamalakhe, Mpumelelo Gumbi explained that the album was inspired by everyday life - the realities and circumstances people encounter daily.

South Coast hip-hop sensation Mpumelelo Gumbi, better known as Shon G, recently released a new album, ‘Mpumelelo’.

Gumbi told Fever that the album has 18 tracks, 14 songs and four interludes, saying that he featured the likes of Musiholiq, Olefied Khetha, Masta T, Killa Bee Mawazawaza, Happy, Gambu, Zama Zee and Theo amaqathaziqobayo on the album.

Originally from Gamalakhe, Gumbi explained that the album was inspired by everyday life – the realities and circumstances people encounter daily.

“It’s about embracing all of it, the good and the bad. The album is my namesake, Mpumelelo which means success,” he said, adding that the way people have received it has been a pleasant surprise.

He said: “The album has been receiving very positive feedback even after being away from the industry. I am humbled by the love and support.”

The former Olwandle High School pupil explained that his passion for music started when he was 15 years old.
He said he used to listen to American hip-hop artists such as Busta Rhymes, the Fugees and others.

“Just by listening to their flow and lyrics, I fell in love with the hip-hop sound. I even wrote down their lyrics. I eventually started writing my own lyrics and together with some of my peers, we formed a group, The DC Crew and the rest is history,” said Gumbi.

Speaking of his goals in his career, Gumbi said he hopes to one day own a music company that will be able to help and groom young talent.

“Also, my goal is to contribute to the music that I love so much. If the South Coast could continue to buy, stream and share my music, support my live performances (gigs) and also follow and engage on all my social media pages – I would appreciate it,” he said.

The album is out on all digital platforms.

Mpumelelo Gumbi’s passion for music started at the age of 15.
