Devotees worship Lord Muruga
The full moon in the Tamil month of Chittirai is called Chitra Paruvam.
Devotees recently turned out in large numbers at the Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alayam’s Chitra Paruvam Kavady.
Held at the temple premises, Chittirai refers to a month in the Tamil calendar, and Paruvam refers to the phase of the moon. Chitra Paruvam is a combination of the name of the month and the phase of the moon. The full moon in the Tamil month of Chittirai is called Chitra Paruvam.
A Kavady is a pole slung across the shoulder of a devotee to evenly distribute the weight of whatever is being carried on either end of the pole.
It is observed to worship Lord Muruga, who represents wisdom and strength.
Chitra Paruvam is a day of prayer and penance.
He is the deity of youth, power and virtue. Devotees carry water, fruit and milk to the temple.
The festival is a time of repentance. Generally, 10 days before Chitra Paruvam Kavady, a flag is hoisted at the temple, denoting the event.
