All systems go for matric exams

The Department of Education in the Ugu District is confident that it will achieve its target of a 95% pass rate for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

Matric exams began on Monday this week, with English and Afrikaans being written.

The acting director of Ugu District’s Department of Education, Nkosinathi Madadi, said they hope to reach their target and have irregularity-free examinations.

Madadi was speaking at Scottburg High School as the KZN Department of Education monitored the first day of the examinations.

“We are happy with the way exams started and seeing candidates enjoying exams. We have 132 schools, and they all reported that they started on time despite the rain. We hope that at the end of the exams, the district will achieve its target of 95%,” he said.

Representing the department, Weziwe Hadebe said 11 800 learners in the district sat for English Paper 3.

“The day that we have been waiting and working hard for is finally here. As part of ensuring that exams go well, we are here in the Ugu District to monitor. We have been here since when the principal had to collect the exam papers. Although we were worried about the weather, I am satisfied with the preparations made by the district to ensure that they run a creditable examination,” said Hadebe.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Ugu District Municipality mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi wished the matric class of 2024 all the best.

Mqadi said this period was particularly demanding for teachers, parents, grandparents, guardians, and other family members who provide vital emotional support.

“We appeal to parents to avoid placing excessive pressure on learners, opting for unwavering support that enhances their well-being. We kindly request parents to establish a peaceful and conducive study environment at home,” he said.
