Athletic club hosts successful race day

XJ Athletic Club recently hosted a successful race at Mt Ayliff/Emaxesibeni.
It was the first race since its establishment in 2018, and runners came from all walks of life to grace this occasion, some from near and some as far as Umtata, Matatiele, Ngcobo, Ugie, Kokstad and other neighbouring towns.
President of the XJ Athletic Club team, Mncedisi Nxumalo, said it was a successful race with the highest level of professionalism where everything was planned well.
Nxumalo said the water stations, marshalls and traffic officers were allocated accordingly to accommodate runners to have a friendly run.
He explained that the club was initiated by a few individuals with the common purpose of promoting healthy living among the residents of the small rural town. To date, this team has grown dramatically and has members nationally and internationally.
The team also has a strong development wing that caters for a junior side that did well in various running competitions recently.
Some of the senior runners, or ‘pink drive’ as they are affectionately known because of their traditional colours of pink and black, have taken part in ultra races like the Comrades Marathon.
On the same day, some of the team members of XJ Athletic Club painted the streets of the USA pink at a marathon in Chicago.
“The team’s executive thanked its members and sponsors for their commitment to make the race day a success. Victors of the race did not go home empty handed as they received prizes that amounted to R10 000 in different categories,” said Nxumalo.
