Info shared at pig production workshop
Pork farmers and those interested in pork farming were invited, and they came in their numbers to get as much information as they could.
The Department of Agriculture, in partnership with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, held a pig production information day at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Thursday.
The South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (Sappo) was also part of the day to facilitate a sustainable and profitable pork value chain by providing strategic direction.

Agricultural advisor Brian Mvuyana said relevant information was provided on how to nurture pigs and make a business out of it.
Mvuyana said most people from rural areas were raised by parents who sold animals for a living but had no information on how to run it as a business.
In a presentation, Boykie Mogase from Sappo explained breeding methods, as well as how the animals should be fed after birth and how piglets should be raised.
With graphs and visuals, Mogase showed how a pig’s enclosure should be built and the estimated cost.
Producing pigs can be costly; however, a farmer can also make a great profit.
Mbangiswa Ngizwa from KwaMasinenge said his pigs sold for about R4 000 each once fully grown.
He said he gained a lot of information at the workshop and would love to grow his business if he acquires enough funds.
